First Trimester

How far along? I am posting about weeks 5 through 13 (first trimester)

Total weight gain/loss: In the first trimester I lost 10 pounds. Mostly due to nausea in the evening and the lack of eating, but I think some of the weight loss was due in part to going off fertility medication.

Maternity clothes? My awesome sister-in-law gave me some of her maternity clothes which included a great belly band that I have been using with my regular pants and dress pants.

Stretch marks? Nope, started using Bio-Oil.

Symptoms: Nausea in the evening and slight cramping

Sleep: The more sleep the better. Been in bed by 9pm most nights. Tired all the time.

Best moment this week: In the first trimester, just getting through the nausea was the best moment of the week for me.

Have you told family and friends: Yes

Miss Anything? Eating normally and having energy.  I miss my green tea lemonades from Starbucks.

Movement: Not yet

Food cravings: Nope, mostly food aversions.

Anything making you queasy or sick: Going to the grocery store.  I get what I need and get out.

Have you started to show yet: I started to get a small bump at week 12.

Baby is a: Don't know yet - will know at week 20 :)

Belly Button in or out? In

Wedding rings on or off? On

Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy most days, but I can get a little emotional and moody here and there.

Looking forward to: The next ultrasound

I will post weeks 14-16 next and then I will finally be caught up and then I will post
weekly updates :)

First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage, Then Comes...

Baby Deck, or as we affectionately call, Baby Bean!  We are over the moon excited to have this little person enter our lives, January 1, 2015.  It has been a long journey that has had it's fair share of ups and downs, to say the least.  Here is a little summary of our story...

When my husband and I got married in 2011 we did not expect to struggle with infertility.  At first, we just said if it happens it happens, but when a little over a year passed and we were still not pregnant, I became concerned.  Every month I was spending money on ovulation kits and getting "smiley faces" when I was ovulating, but again nothing.  People would tell me to "relax," "it will happen," but when you are 34 and time just passes by so quickly, it is not as easy to wait as you think.  I decided to seek help from my OB/GYN.  They suggested that my husband and I go and get tested just to make sure we were both okay.  My husbands results came back good and so did mine...so now what?! My doctor then wanted me to go on Clomid for three months.  He said the chances of it working in the first three months were high considering I was healthy.  The first month came and went, and then the second, and then by the third I was really disappointed.  I mean this medication is not fun.  It made me moody, irritable and not fun to be around.  I went in for a follow-up appointment with my doctor to discuss my options, and the first thing he said was "it's not working, you need to see an infertility specialist." I bawled my eyes out...really? Why? We are fine and healthy? They referred me to a specialist that was close to home.  I had also heard success stories from friends that they were the best doctors for infertility.

We started our journey with Shady Grove Fertility, September 2013.  In January 2014, we started the IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) process.  This is definitely not something I will sugar coat for you.  It was hard, and emotionally and physically draining, but I kept thinking about the end result...a healthy child.  The hardest part for me, were the injections in the stomach and going in to be monitored daily.  The point of IVF is to grow your eggs larger, so that they can retrieve them for fertilization.  Each day they grew bigger and bigger and by retrieval day in February, it felt like I was ready to burst.  About one hour prior to retrieval, I was in severe pain.  Little did I know that I was ovulating.  The nurse told me on the way back to the operating area, that I was ovulating x's 10! I could not wait to get them out.  I was under local anesthesia and did not feel the procedure at all.  I am telling you this because I made the mistake of You Tubing "Egg Retrieval," well there were videos of girls awake and crying during the process because of the pain.  I was mortified.  So please!! DO NOT search the internet for answers.  Shady Grove actually had an amazing Facebook page and it helped me get through each day to hear other success stories that were uplifting and motivational.

When I came out of surgery, I had some cramping...it wasn't bad though.  We went home and I relaxed for the rest of the day.  Before my retrieval, my doctor told me that they might have to cancel the IVF transfer due to Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS).  In a normal IVF procedure, you take your meds, have a retrieval, they fertilize your eggs with your husbands sperm, and then you wait to hear how many fertilized into embryos, and then they call to let you know what day to come back in to transfer one of the embryos.  In my case, I was hyperstimulated from the medication, so they had to freeze all of my good embryos.  We froze 6.  Out of 24 eggs retrieved, 14 fertilized, and 6 became embryos.  My doctor was concerned that if he transferred a fresh embryo that I would miscarry.  He said my chances to get pregnant with a frozen embryo were a lot higher.  In March 2014, we started a new process called FET (Frozen Embryo Transfer).  This process was much easier than IVF.  I did not need to be monitored daily and shots were much easier, even though they were larger and had to be injected in my backside.  I have to admit when I opened the medication package, I was a little intimidated by the size of the needle.  Do not let this scare you.  My husband thought there was no way he could inject me with them, but it got easier over time.  It helps that you can numb the area before and heat the area after.  It helped with sensitivity and soreness.

On April 15th we went in for our transfer of one AA embryo.  It was fascinating.  We got to see what our embryo looked like frozen and then thawed.  It all happened so quickly and did not hurt at all.  I was only uncomfortable when they had to push on my stomach to use the ultrasound while my bladder was full.  After the procedure was over we went home and waited.  We had to wait two weeks (the 2WW - 2 week wait) to find out if we were pregnant!  It was the hardest time ever.  Two weeks after the transfer, I went in to the office to get my Beta test done (blood test).  I had to wait 8 hours to get the results...It was the hardest 8 hours to get through ever!  When they called me, all I could do was hyperventilate.  I was so nervous and shaking so bad.  I was also at work, which made things even harder.  When the nurse told me over the phone I was pregnant, I cried.  I was so overcome with emotion.  I called my husband right after, and he thought it didn't work because I was crying so hard.  He was so excited when I told him we were pregnant.  I was in my first trimester of pregnancy at 4 1/2 weeks. :)  We told our parents right away, but waited to tell the rest of family and friends until I was 12 weeks.  We didn't want to jinx ourselves after all we had been through.

Up until about 10 weeks I was instructed to still take my injectable medication of Progesterone and Estrogen.  I had two ultrasounds up until that point and everything looked great...heartbeat was strong.  I graduated from Shady Grove Fertility at 9 weeks.  We can not thank Dr. Munabi, our nurse Melanie and the rest of the Shady Grove staff enough for what they did for us and helping us through this journey.

My goal is to post weekly updates of my bump and pregnancy.  I am a little behind as I am 16 weeks tomorrow, so I hope to give a first trimester summary in the next few days.

Hope you are having a good week :)

Mailbox Post

I accomplished a small project this weekend, the mailbox post.  It was probably the easiest update I have had thus far.  I was pleasantly surprised how little time it took to apply two coats of paint to the post.  All said and done, I think it took about an hour total.  I did have some help from mother nature with the beautiful weather this past Memorial Day weekend.  My goal is to paint the front door the same color, Valspar Dark Kettle Black in exterior stain/paint.

You can see by the photo below that the previous color was like a maroon/red color.  I wanted a more modern feel, so I chose black.  In updating the post, I came to realize the original color was a hunter green.  The front door is currently still maroon, but was also green at one point in time.  Out with the old in with the new! We added new house numbers in nickle from Lowe's and a solar post light that fit on the post perfectly and gives off great light at night.

I would like to spray paint the mailbox pewter/nickle, but that will have to be a project for another weekend.

Hope you had a great holiday!

Dry Shampoo Review

Well... here we go! I have been looking for a good dry shampoo for awhile and after watching a whole heck of a lot of YouTube videos, I decided to pick up these two.  Batiste Dry Shampoo Cool & Crisp Fresh and Psssst! the TRUE Original - Both purchased at CVS. These were both top rated among YouTubers, so I decided to purchase Batiste first.  It was on sale too, so that was a definite perk.

Background story... the reason I had been looking for a dry shampoo was to eliminate my hair washing during the week.  My mom, the hairdresser, would always tell me not to wash my hair everyday because it would dry my hair out, but I never listened, I just couldn't stand my hair to get oily.  Most recently, I have been trying to wash my hair every other day, but it was killing me to have oily hair.  I would watch YouTube videos of girls that went 3 days without a wash....REALLY?????? That would never happen, unless I went camping or was super sick.  Two days is my max.

When I first tried Batiste, I was pleasantly surprised.  It left my hair smelling and feeling fresh, and gave some extra volume.  I noticed right away that there was A LOT of powder on me and in my hair.  I really had to rub it in to absorb the oils.  Overall I liked it, but I felt that it didn't last all day. By the middle of the day, I found I was putting my hair up.  Don't get me wrong it is a great product, I just didn't like all the powder. If you have darker hair, you are in luck.  They have a version just for you here. I might have to try the blonde dry shampoo in the near future.

Now on to Pssst! This is a great dry shampoo as well.  Much less powder and absorbs the oil just as good as Batiste.  I personally liked Pssst! better.  More so because of the powder and I didn't have it all over my clothes in the morning when getting ready for work.  It definitely soaks up the oils, but again it was not lasting the entire day for me.  Hopefully you will have a better result with both products.  I am open to suggestions for other brands to try.  I know I would also like to try some salon brands too.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or you would like me to review a different product.

Here are the backs of each dry shampoo.  I like the photos Batiste displays to show you how to use their product.

Visit Reviews.com, they spent 6 weeks researching, testing over 50 formulas and consulting with experienced stylists/beauty industry experts to determine which were the best at delivering fresh hair without a full wash! Batiste is in their TOP 5!!!

I hope you have a great weekend!

Family Room Gets Painted

This painting project took a lot longer than anticipated and is still in the process of being completed.  We do not own much furniture so painting has been on our first project on the "To Do" list with each room.  The brown in this room made the room so dark and gloomy, so I decided to lighten it up a bit with the same paint color we used in the foyer.  Don't get me wrong, I love the color brown but it just wasn't my cup of tea in this room.  The trim needed to be done as well, which meant painting the door and the window...ugh what a process.  The trim looked like it hadn't been painted since the house was built 20 years ago.  It definitely needed some TLC.  As soon as the trim was done, I couldn't believe how it brightened up the room.  I just love the color we chose.  My goal is to paint all the doors and trim the same color throughout the house as I go.  There are dings and stains, so this white really covers those up.

The walls took about two days to paint (lots of speckling and sanding old holes and marks).  I have to say, I am more than happy with the results.  The fireplace really pops now.  The only items left to do are changing out all the outlets/switches and air vents to white and replacing the carpet..but that will take a little more time.  We are debating what flooring to put where the foyer opens up to the family room and where the fish tank is placed.  I would love to get hardwood, but that might have to be the 10-year plan.  Projects add up fast and take so much time, we might just have to put in a Berber carpet instead.  You wouldn't believe the stains and marks on the current carpeting.

After
Paint color:
Walls - Sherwin Williams, Amazing Gray
Trim - Valspar, Du Jour (Lowe's)

As you can see there are paint swatches on the wall in the kitchen.  This is next on the paint list.  I am very excited.  I can't wait to get that orange color covered.  I think that color looks great in other homes, but not ours...it really make the entire kitchen look orange and accentuates the floor color and make the tiles look pink.  We personally love more neutral colors.  Some colors we love for this space are Sherwin Williams, Rainwashed and Intellectual Gray (one shade darker above Amazing Gray). We are looking forward to seeing the final results.
Have a great weekend :)

Great Finds - My First Haul!

In Pennsylvania, the Winter has been harsh with the Polar Vortex temperatures and increased snowfalls.  Being cooped up in the house has been fun at times, but can get boring fast too.  I have been chomping at the bit to SHOP and get some new things for the house.  We are waiting to purchase our big ticket furniture items when we have most of the rooms newly painted and updates complete.  So, my only options have been purchasing accessories...which is a lot of fun when you can find what you are looking for or see something that catches your eye.  I actually found some great things within the past few weeks.  I was finally able to get out of our snow covered driveway a few weeks ago to visit my Mom in Bucks County, which is a little over an hours drive from our home.  The great thing about going to visit is getting to see my family, and also the awesome stores close by to one another.

While I was at my Mom's, I found these...

I had been looking for a medium sized sunburst mirror for above our bed.  I found a lot online, but they were extremely pricey.  I loved the ones on Joss & Main, but I couldn't see spending $150 for a small mirror.  I was surprised by the deal I found on this at Homegoods, and it was only $35! It looks great - I can't wait to show you our before and after shots of the bedroom...coming soon.

I have been in search of a laundry basket - they are not easy to come by, especially cute ones.
I found this one at Homegoods for $19.99.  It is great when taking laundry down stairs
to the laundry room.

I looked for similar ones and didn't find any.
They are sold at Homegoods and I saw a few at TJMaxx.

Accessories - well I have been picking up things when I see them.
 Vase - TJ Maxx
Frame - Homegoods
I can sometimes have a great trip to Homegoods and find a lot of things, and go there on
other occasions and find nothing.

This table was such a deal!!! It was originally $80. I was super excited when this was on sale and I got an additional 30% off with my Kohl's coupon. I think I paid $25 for it - I was a happy camper.   My plan is to get an accent chair for our bedroom and this will be placed next to it.
Accent Table - Kohl's
Check out the above link - it is still on sale :)

Pillows, pillows, pillows...I just love them, and guess what? I got them all from Walmart! Walmart has stepped up their home goods line and are really keeping up with trends.  I found two on one shopping trip and the others on another trip.  I am not sure where they will end up in the house yet, but I couldn't resist, every time I go there they are picked through, so this was a great trip.
Plus, they were very inexpensive.
(I might keep the black and cream ones on the bench in the foyer)
Left to right; Better Homes and Gardens - Irongate Pillow, Black/Stone
Better Homes and Gardens - Rosette Pillow, Ivory
Main Stay - Teal Fretwork, Teal
(Special thanks to my husband for picking this up for me this weekend- xo)
Main Stay - Ziggy Pillow, Mushroom (not listed on their website)

Can you tell I love this pattern? I have been looking for a new rug for the front door and found this.  I really love it, just wish they had it in larger sizes.  We have a fairly large foyer and I wanted another as a runner from the foyer to the family room.  I might use this in another room once I find two rugs that will work.  I couldn't pass it up when I saw it, it was reasonably priced too.

I have been in search of a end of bed bench for our bedroom.  I found a few I loved on Hayneedle but was questioning the sizing by the photos.  I wanted something that would be large and tall enough for our king sized bed but was not finding anything that fit.  I finally settled on this one...

Altea Upholstered End of Bed Bench

When UPS dropped the bench off, I was super excited, until I opened it. It was poorly made, so needless to say I was disappointed.  I didn't want to deal with the hassle of sending it back, so I bargained with Hayneedle and they gave me 20% off my order for keeping the bench and fixing it myself.  I moved it to the bedroom and realized we needed something wider and about two inches taller.. it just didn't look right to us.  The bed looked like it swallowed it up.  I then brought it back downstairs and decided to put it in the foyer and was happy with this location!

Have a great week everyone!

House Updates

The past few weeks have been crazy, not just because of the holidays, but we decided to do some house updates in between.  Crazy, I know, but it was the only time we had free with us both being off from work.  We had ordered carpet for the master bedroom and foyer/hallway area and also vinyl for the laundry room, before Thanksgiving, from Lowes.  We thought that it would take until January to come in, but Lowe's called in December saying that everything was in and we could schedule the week of Christmas.  So we decided to schedule it then. My goal was to paint the railing in December, but we had plans every weekend, so I thought I would get it done the week of Christmas.  The carpet and vinyl was arriving Friday and Saturday, so I had to bump up my time to paint in the beginning of the week. The results look amazing, but it took so much time.  The black took the longest because I had to apply 3 coats and then 3 coats of poly-acrylic.

Rugs are StainMaster- color: Key West.
Railing paint colors- Valspar, Dark Kettle Black & Valspar, Du Jour
Walls- Sherwin Williams, Amazing Gray

Laundry room color and vinyl: before

After
Paint - Valspar Merlin
Vinyl - Lowe's

Things are finally coming together... It's awesome to see the hard work pay off.
